Eye Allergy

It is a condition of the eye wherin the eye turns red, itchy and waters and happens due to exposure of the eye to allergens in the environment.
WHY IT HAPPENS
Eye allergies develop when the body’s immune system becomes sensitized and overreacts to something in the environment that typically causes no problem in most people. An allergic reaction can occur when that “something” (called an allergen) comes in contact with antibodies attached to the mast cells in your eyes; the cells respond by releasing histamine and other substances or chemicals that cause tiny blood vessels to leak and the eyes to become itchy, red and watery.
TYPES OF EYE ALLERGIES
- SEASONAL ALLERGIC CONJUNCTIVITIS – This happens in only certain seasons like summer or just after rains
- PERENNIAL ALLERGIC CONJUNCTIVITIS- This happens all year round
- VERNAL ALLERGIC CONJUNCTIVITIS(VKC) – Severe form of allergic conjunctivitis seen mostly in boys and young men
- A TOPIC KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS – Affects older patients usually with history of atopic dermatitis.
