Cornea

Cornea is the outermost layer of the eye visible to others as the black portion. It is made up of six layers. It can develop problems like corneal infections, keratoconus, contact lens infections ,corneal dystrophies, chemical injuries etc
Corneal Conditions And Treatment Options

CORNEAL INFECTIONS
Cornea can develop whitish/yellowish discolouration with loss of vision and pain secondary to infection by bacteria/fungus/virus.
To treat it, initially we will start on antibiotics/antifungals/antivirals. If not reducing we might have to do a CORNEAL TRANSPLANT.

KERATOCONUS
Due to inherent weakness in the cornea either due to severe eye rubbing or genetic causes, the cornea tends to bulge(ectatic) with curvature increase and becomes thin.
To control this condition we might have to do a corneal procedure called C3R(crosslinking)

CHEMICAL INJURIES
When the eye gets exposed to acidic/alkali substances presenting with intense redness and pain, the cornea can suffer a severe burn with discolouration.
To treat it, eyes should be thoroughly washed and a cornea specialist should be contacted immediately for further management.

CORNEA TRANSPLANT
If a patient develops severe corneal infection, corneal dystrophy, bullous keratopathy we might have to do a corneal transplant.
In this procedure cornea from the affected patient is removed and replaced with the cornea from the donor (after death).

CONTACT LENS INFECTIONS
Due to unhygienic usage of the contact lens or some problems with the contact lens case/solution/lens , contact lens users might end up with a corneal infection.

C3R(CORNEAL COLLAGEN CROSSLINKING)
To strengthen the cornea in keratoconus condition , riboflavin dye is used along with UV-A light of a certain intensity-shone on the cornea to incite crosslinking strengthening the corneal bonds.
