Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye, wherein due to high intraocular pressure there is damage to the eye nerve(optic nerve) causing loss of vision. In the initial stages patient will not realise that he is suffering from glaucoma unless he gets his IOP(Intra ocular Pressure) measured and visual fields test done.
WHAT CAUSES GLAUCOMA
Due to either increase in the production of aqueous humour(fluid in the eye) or obstruction in the outflow of fluid from the eye, there results an increase in the eye pressure which presses over the nerve to damage it.
TYPES OF GLAUCOMA
- OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA – more common, seen in the age group above 40 years
- CLOSED ANGLE GLAUCOMA – less common, seen in any age group, caused due to secondary causes
SYMPTOMS:
blurred vision,
severe eye pain,
headache,
rainbow-colored halos around lights, and
nausea and vomiting.
GLAUCOMA DETECTION:
- Regular IOP measurements
- GONIOSCOPY – viewing the angle of the eye
- Fundoscopy – to assess the optic nerve clinically for glaucomatous changes
- Visual Fields assessment – to measure the loss of vision
TREATMENT:
- MEDICAL- ANTI GLAUCOMA DROPS to reduce the eye pressure
– YAG PI(LASER) - SURGICAL- TRABECULOPLASTY
